There was a time in Toronto when the only things you could get from a food cart or truck would be French fries, hot dogs, burgers and ice cream. That has since changed in a big way and now the options seem almost endless by comparison. No matter what you’re craving, there’s likely a food truck in town that serves it. Not sure what to order or where from? Here are 12 of the tastiest food trucks in this Canadian city.
Bacon Nation
Love bacon? Bacon Nation has you covered. What began as a food vendor at the CNE morphed into a popular Toronto food truck and is now also a brick and mortar eatery in the city. Their menu is dedicated to all things bacon including sandwiches, burgers and poutine.
Kal and Mooy
Kal and Mooy is a relatively new food truck and is the only one in the city that offers East African eats in the form of gourmet Somali dishes with a twist. They, too, have added a physical location to the mix with a restaurant on Toronto’s Queen Street. The menu at both the truck and the restaurant is varied, flavourful and includes many options for both meat eaters and vegetarians.
Fidel Gastro’s
Fidel Gastro’s is arguably one of the most well-known and popular food trucks in Toronto. The truck, nicknamed Priscilla, roams the city serving some seriously decadent sandwiches and sides as well as a four cheese mac and cheese. The Fidel Gastro’s team also has a street food-focused restaurant called Lisa Marie.
M.E.N.U. Food Truck
M.E.N.U Food Truck gets its inspiration from street food in Asia, and the dishes you can get here are playful and creative. Some of their bestsellers include their roster of Asian poutines, fried rice balls stuffed with various meats and veggies, and the roti tacos. The owners of the truck spend their downtime in Asia sampling street foods as inspiration for their evolving menu.
Rome’n Chariot
If you’re a fan of Italian food than you’re going to want to track down Rome’n Chariot, which has a focus on classic Italian dishes that are as flavourful as they are comforting. Choose from a variety of items, from salads and appetizers to sliders, sandwiches and pastas.
Gourmet Gringos
Gourmet Gringos first introduced Toronto to authentic Latin food on wheels in 2012 and the concept has expanded to include several pop-up and brick and mortar locations. The truck serves up handheld street food items like tacos, burritos and quesadillas.
Buster’s Sea Cove
A fixture in St. Lawrence Market for more than a decade, Buster’s Sea Cove now has a seafood-focused food truck that has proven to be very popular no matter where it ends up. Lineups of happy customers order up lobster and crab rolls as well as a variety of fish tacos.
Thunderin’ Thelma
This mobile extension of popular Caplansky’s Delicatessen has been dubbed Thunderin’ Thelma and you’ll find her roaming the city feeding hungry people wherever she goes. Caplansky’s food truck serves a concise menu of Jewish deli staples and house smoked meat. You’ll find smoked meat sandwiches, BBQ brisket sliders, pulled brisket tacos and grilled cheese along with a selection of sides.
The Feisty Jack
The Feisty Jack is operated by a British ex-pat who serves British-style street food to hungry Toronto visitors. There is, of course, fish and chips, as well as sandwiches on grilled naan bread. Other menu items include the chicken curry box, macaroni and cheese with rapini and bacon, and sticky toffee pudding.
Burgatory
As the name would suggest, Burgatory deals in burgers, decadent, addictive burgers all named after the seven deadly sins. Order a side of heaven fries, an equally addictive combination of perfectly fried russet potatoes covered in white truffle and parmesan.
Localista
The Localista food truck takes the farm-to-table concept and makes it mobile with a menu featuring fresh, creative dishes made with food sourced from local farms. The diverse menu changes often based on the season and what ingredients are available, but you can expect bold flavours you’ll likely want to go back for.
Curbside Bliss Cupcakes
The food you get from food trucks isn’t always savoury – dessert is also available on wheels. Curbside Bliss Cupcakes is Canada’s first mobile cupcake kitchen and they serve a variety of delicious cupcakes in flavours like apple pie, blueberry, cookies and cream, chocolate, banana cream, raspberry and salted caramel among many others.
